BHS Sluggish in Football Scrimmage with Morgantown

By Jeff Toquinto on August 14, 2012

This evening’s scrimmage between Bridgeport High School and Morgantown on the artificial surface at Pony Lewis Field likely didn’t go the way Indians coach Josh Nicewarner had hoped – at least not between both team’s first units.

During the first hour of the scrimmage that saw both teams get two shots of moving the ball with their first team offense 70 yards in 10 plays against the opposing unit’s first team defense, things didn’t likely go as planned. On offense, the Indians didn’t have a whole lot of success, particularly in their first offensive series that did not produce anything offensively. The lone highlight was a successful point-after kick by Justin Richter following the failed offensive set.

The second offensive series did produce a few solid plays, starting with the very first run by Brett Hathaway as he rambled for six yards. That was followed by an impressive 15-yard run by Cameron Stanley who pulled several Mohigan defenders with him across midfield.

Bridgeport’s biggest play of the second 10-play series came on the sixth play when Anthony Caldera, who was taking snaps at quarterback, took the ball on a keeper and scampered around the right side of the MHS defense and, after cutting through the right side of the line between decent blocking, eventually back to his left and raced 43 yards for the Indians’ lone touchdown of the first two series involving the first team offense of Bridgeport.

The Indians ended the second 10-play series, unfortunately, with a fumbled end around that saw Morgantown return the turnover into a 32-yard fumble recovery for six points. That wouldn’t be the only points Morgantown would score.

On both of their offensive possessions, Morgantown found the end zone. Shoddy tackling led to the first score, while the second score by MHS also had the benefit of  poor tackling. On the second score, Morgantown got the benefit of a missed call as a sideline official – helping a new official get his game legs – mentioned casually “you missed two blocks in the back on that play.” However, it may not have made a difference as the Mohigans’ first team moved the ball without too much trouble.

Bridgeport did play the game without its lone offensive line starter from last year, Tyler Morgan. He, along with Gino Alonge, was a player that figured to see time this year that missed the scrimmage due to injury. Both are expected to be back in the lineup for Friday’s scrimmage.

Bridgeport will return to the gridiron for its second, and final, scrimmage of the 2012 preseason at 6 p.m. Friday against Parkersburg South. The game will be held at Jamison Field.
