Comforting Military Families is Mission of Colleen Driscoll's New Children's Book; Launch Party August 12

Hero is a noun, meaning it is a person, place or thing.  They demonstrate courage and are admired by others for their qualities. None are more deserving of the title than those who serve in the military ensuring our freedom.  And while those heroes are deployed, their families hold them close and make sure the little ones are comforted with pictures, stories, books and stuffed animals.

For local author Colleen Driscoll, those who wait patiently at home while a loved one is deployed served as inspiration for her latest book, Buddy’s Special Mission.  Prior to moving to Bridgeport, Driscoll taught students near Quantico, Virginia whose family members were serving overseas.

“I saw how difficult it was for the students and their families,” she said.  “So I decided to write a book describing activities families can do to help cope during a loved one’s absence and raise awareness of the trials endured by military families.”

The book is a military story about a dog in charge of his family while his owner is deployed
overseas.  Special Agent Buddy takes his responsibility seriously and protects and comforts the owner’s “pup” Jake.

“Writing the story from a dog’s point of view is an interesting spin to ease the emotions from the story’s essence,” she said.

Bridgeport High School Alumna Kelsey Musgrave illustrated the book, which is appropriate for ages 4-8.

"When I was first approached for the job, I was so shocked, it seemed like a dream come true," said Musgrave. "I have enjoyed myself immensely working on Buddy's Special Mission. This experience has also taught me a lot about the book industry and has set me on the path to be a full time illustrator. I will be forever grateful to the Driscoll family."

On Saturday, August 12, Buddy’s Special Mission will celebrate with a book launch at the Bridgeport City Library.  Beginning at 1:00p.m,. the event will include autographed copies of the book, illustration demonstrations by Musgrave, refreshments and music.  Buddy  stuffed animal dogs will also be available to purchase during the event.

Driscoll has won several awards for her children’s books in the Piper the Elf series and will be releasing the latest in the series this fall.
