The Tri-M Music Honorary is new at Bridgeport High School and the group is delivering holiday cheer through the international language – music.

 

The students’ holiday tunes will first be heard Dec. 10 when they do some good, old-fashioned Christmas caroling. Then, on Dec. 15 – after their voices and instruments are all warmed up – the performers will be part of a benefit concert to be held at BHS.

 

“There are around six different small ensembles formed within the Tri-M chapter to present holiday music that evening,” said Robin Bohn, director. “Strings, bass, woodwinds, jazz and percussion groups have been practicing on their own during school and on their own time to prepare for this concert.”

 

The concert – which will also include performances by the BHS Choir - takes place 7 p.m. Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for students; all proceeds benefiting the Clarksburg branch of the Salvation Army.

 

“When we first decided to do this benefit concert, the students voted to make the Salvation Army the first local organization they would support through music service,” Bohn said. “We have small groups practicing traditional holiday favorites right now for the benefit concert and also performances for local nursing homes and churches.”

 

Tri-M is a national music service organization for students who meet academic requirements in music and no-music classes, Bohn said.

“This club presents music as a public service within the community; it’s like a musical Key Club,” she said. “The BHS chapter was brought back in October, so it’s just getting started.”

 

Bohn said to keep your ears open for groups which may grace your doorstep on Dec. 10 and she encourages members of the community to come to the BHS auditorium Dec. 15, not only to listen to some holiday music, but perhaps also sing some.

 

“We’re also going to have a short carol sing in which the audience can participate,” Bohn said. “The music will mostly be traditional favorites, so the audience can expect to hear a lot of familiar tunes and get in the holiday spirit while supporting a great cause.”
