Country Legend Marty Stuart to Kick Off Grand Performance Series of Harrison County Cultural Foundation

The Cultural Foundation of Harrison County is pleased to announce the 2017-2018 season of Grand Performances. The series is to kick off on Saturday, September 23, 2017 with country music legend Marty Stuart at Robert C. Byrd High School in Clarksburg, WV.

With legends like George Jones, Johnny Cash, and Merle Haggard all passed on, country music purists often echo the question Jones himself asked: “Who’s going to fill their shoes?”

The answer, in part, is Marty Stuart. While he’s too gracious to admit it himself, the Grammywinning singer, songwriter, and musician is living, breathing country-music history. He’s played alongside the masters, from Johnny Cash to Lester Flatt, who discovered him.

But most importantly, Stuart continues to record and release keenly relevant music, records that honor country music’s rich legacy while advancing it into the future. Way Out West, his 18th studio album, hits both of those marks. Produced by Mike Campbell (of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers), the album is a cinematic tour-de-force, an exhilarating musical journey through the California desert that solidifies Stuart as a truly visionary artist.

Recently, Marty Stuart & His Fabulous Superlatives appeared on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert to perform “Time Don’t Wait,” off their critically acclaimed album, Way Out West. Released in March 2017, Way Out West was conceived as a love letter to the promised land of California by one of Country music’s living legends. NPR Music proclaims: “Way Out West is Marty Stuart’s album-length paean to the myth and magic of the American West. It finds country’s stalwart neo-traditionalist turning cosmic cowboy for a journey through the Joshua trees, shadowy canyons and desert dreams that tantalize travelers with the promise of a
golden shore on the other side.”

Grand Performances continues with a performance by Two on Tap on Friday, October 27, 2017. Two on Tap brings audiences back in time to an era when couples like Fred & Ginger and Mickey & Judy filled the silver screen with undeniable chemistry, effortless harmony, and precision tap dancing. Gorgeous vocals, exciting choreography, and unique musical arrangements all take center stage in a performance which has entertained tens of thousands worldwide!
Friday, March 9, 2018, will bring Three Redneck Tenors to Harrison County. Three Redneck Tenors are a new breed in the “tenor genre” featuring classically-trained veteran artists. Their musical comedy is like Duck Dynasty goes to Carnegie Hall – down home laughs with big city music! Written by opera-veteran Matthew Lord with music arranged by award-winning composer Craig Bohmler, and starring Mr. Lord, Blake Davidson, and Jonathan Fruge, Three Redneck Tenors were top finalists on "America's Got Talent" and have been thrilling audiences since 2006.

The season will conclude on Thursday, April 26, 2018 with the Side Street Strutters Orchestra. In 1983, a group of talented musicians attending Arizona State University formed a musical ensemble whose artistic focus centered around the musical traditions of early New Orleans jazz. Now, over three decades later, the Side Street Strutters continue to expand their musical palette to encompass nearly a century of classic American jazz.

“The Cultural Foundation is excited to be sharing the best of the world's entertainment and ideas with our friends and neighbors right here in West Virginia,” says Foundation board member Dolores Yoke. “I like knowing these shows have been screened and brought here for
their star quality and excitement. Plus, they're appropriate for everyone.”

The concert series is made possible by the Barbara B. Highland Fund for the Arts, a generous endowment from longtime resident and patron of the arts, the late Barbara Brennan Highland.

“Barbara Brennan Highland loved Community Concerts,” says Yoke. “They brought the world's best music and dance here to be enjoyed with her parents, her friends and later her daughter. Grand Performances is among her generous gifts to us all.”
