Stonewall Resort is “Calling all Captains” to participate in the Fifth Annual Cardboard Boat Race, to be held Saturday, August 19 on Stonewall Jackson Lake during the Stonewall Jackson Triathlon.  The event is being presented by the Stonewall State Park Foundation, with the Stonewall Jackson Lake Boaters Association and Appalachian Stream Restoration as co-sponsors.

Samantha Norris, community outreach director at Stonewall Resort, said, “This fun, and in many cases comedic event is great for youth organizations, community groups and those interested in demonstrating their creativity and engineering skills!  Gather your crew, build your cardboard boat and join us on Stonewall Jackson Lake on August 19th.”

Norris said teams are to construct their vessels out of cardboard, following the rules on the registration form.  On race day, teams are to have their “boats” at the Marina boat launch parking lot by 9 a.m. The race begins at 9:30 a.m. Attendees are asked to be cautious when driving to the marina as the Stonewall Jackson Triathlon will be occurring that morning. The triathlon brings in racers from throughout the state and across the Mid-Atlantic region.

Trophies will be awarded for first through third places, for best overall design and also for the most spectacular “sinking”. There is a $10 fee per boat and all boat crews will receive a t-shirt.
For event rules and registration, please click here or call the marina at (304) 269-8895. To ensure the desired t-shirt size, participants are encouraged to register by or before August 11. There will be late registration from 8:00-9:00 a.m. the day of the event at the Marina boat launch parking lot.

Participants under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult in the boat.

“This will be a great event for participants and spectators and we encourage all groups – Boy, Scouts, Girl Scouts, school groups, 4-H groups and others – to register and compete in the race,” Norris said.
