July, August to Feature Family Float Nights: "Sing" and "Jumanji" Coming to Big Screen

Each year, Bridgeport Parks & Recreation hosts a movie night at the city pool. This year, the community will be treated to two poolside films. On July 13, the animated musical “Sing” featuring the voices of Matthew McConaughey, Reese Witherspoon and Seth MacFarlane will be projected on the big screen at Bridgeport City Pool. On Aug. 10, the featured flick is the high-adventure “Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle,” starring Jack Black, Kevin Hart and Dwayne Johnson.

Price of admission is $3 for all ages – the regular pool rate for family night swim, said Director of Parks & Recreation Joe Shuttleworth. The pool opens at 7 p.m. both evenings with the featured film starting around 9 p.m. Movies will be projected on the city’s inflatable 16-20-foot screen, viewable from the pool. Families are invited to bring their favorite pool rafts and floats for the occasion. The pool concession stand will be open with everything from pepperoni rolls and chips to candy and ice cream treats available for purchase.

Released in 2016, “Sing” is a message of courage, hope and perseverance. Having been raised in the grandeur of the theater business, Buster Moon – a dapper Koala bear – is desperate to revive his late dad’s theater venue and decides to host a talent show.

Miscommunication about the prize money brings an entourage of humanoid vocalists – Witherspoon (a mama pig), MacFarlane (a sneaky mouse), Scarlett Johansson (a porcupine punker) and Tori Kelly (a shy elephant), included. After a series of mishaps and plenty of support and optimism, the show goes on and the theater’s original star – voice by Jennifer Hudson – saves the venue, financing its restoration. The cartoon is rated PG for some rude humor and mild peril.

The 2017-released “Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle” is about some high school kids who discover an old video game console and find themselves transformed into the adult avatars in the game. They quickly learn that it’s not a game to just be played, but also to be survived. Dangerous adventure follows, keeping viewers on the edge of their seats. Other actors featured are Karen Gillan, Rhys Darby, Bobby Cannavale and Nick Jonas, among others. The film is rated PG-13 for adventure action, suggestive content and some language.

The “Family Float Nights” or “Dive-In Movies” as they have become known, are always popular, said Shuttleworth, adding that Bridgeport Parks and Recreation is happy to host them.

“We like these types of family-oriented programs that bring people out to enjoy themselves with their friends and neighbors,” Shuttleworth said. “They represent the smalltown sense of community that we are all about.”

The only if factor is the weather. In the case of rainy weather, events will be canceled.
