The Sanctuary, Other Downtown Businesses, Hosting "TaTatober" Kick-Off Event

The Sanctuary is joining forces with other downtown businesses to launch “TaTatober.” Through the month-long campaign, October will feature a breast cancer awareness theme that will kick off Sept. 28 with a unique event.

“We’re having a bra decorating party, inviting anyone who wants to participate to bring their bras and join us at The Sanctuary, where they can decorate and bedazzle it,” said Jenny Starkey Reed, artist and instructor at Starving Artist/The Sanctuary. “We’ll display all the bras in the window of our storefront.”

Admission to the event is $15 each. Materials such as glue, glitter and other decorative accents will be provided. Various downtown businesses and juried artisans/vendors of The Sanctuary will be present, each placing his or her own spin on the event.

Judy Bonamico of Expressions will be doing pink hair extensions for an extra fee and Almost Heaven Desserts will sell pink cupcakes. All are invited to get on board. Funds raised through admission of the Sept. 28 event – as well as a portion of the proceeds raised through extra sales and services – will benefit the American Cancer Society.

It’s likely that a people’s choice contest will take place, enabling individuals pay $1 per vote for the best-decorated bra.

“And if we have enough to fill up the window, we might have a contest to guess how many bras there are,” Reed said.

It’s an event in the making. Businesses and clubs are welcome and encouraged to provide ideas on how they can take part. Some vendors are donating a portion of their October sales to the cause.

Reed asks that interested individuals save the date. Donations of money – or bras – are welcome at The Sanctuary, located on West Main Street, just across the Lloyd Lang Bridge from Bridgeport Fire Department.
