City Faces in Different Places

By Hannah Edwards on January 08, 2018 from City Faces via Connect-Bridgeport.com

Please take a moment to meet this week’s City Face, Rachel Yurkovich, sponsored by Higinbotham & Higinbotham, PLLC.

How long have you lived in Bridgeport?  18 years

Where are you originally from? I was born and raised in the Quiet Dell area, graduated from RCB in 1996.

Are you married? Yes, to Tony Yurkovich for 18 years.

Children? Corinne, Freshman at BHS, Ben, 6th Grade at BMS

What is your favorite color? I really love colors in general, but my daughter said my favorite is definitely green!

Where do you work? I have worked for the Department of Justice for 20 years.

Favorite Bridgeport spot?  My favorite spot is only here once a year… downtown Main Street during Light Up Night! There is nothing like Bridgeport on that one, special holiday night.

Favorite WV spot outside of Bridgeport?  My parents live in Montrose now, and I love that area… Blackwater Falls, Canaan Valley, Davis, Thomas… Our state is beautiful!

Favorite place outside of WV?  I love Ocean Isle Beach, NC. I want to travel more and hope to go out West and to Europe one day.

Favorite restaurant? I would much rather eat at a locally-owned restaurant than a chain. My favorite is Cody’s. I love their Bunjal Curry… YUM!

Best childhood memory? I can’t pick only one. Growing up, my family didn’t have much and literally lived up a hollow – so we were close and resourceful. We spent a lot of time camping, fishing, and being outdoors. I have an older and a younger brother. Being the only girl had its advantages. My brothers always had my back, but I was as tough as any of the boys.

Favorite musical group?  I like and appreciate all kinds of music. My playlist has music from all genres and decades – including Golden Oldies.

Pets?  We have two rescue dogs, Oakli and Leia. Oakli is a hound-mix. She is the sweetest, most laid-back dog I have ever owned – but not very bright. Leia (named after Princess Leia) is a small, tightly-wound terrier-mix who talks a big game but is really a scaredy-dog.

Hobbies? I love to help others. I have served on the United Way of Harrison County Board of Directors. I still like to help in the UW gift wrap booth at the mall during Christmas season. I have coached Bridgeport Youth Cheerleading. I am a member of All Saints Catholic Church, and keep fairly busy in the Parish. I serve as a Eucharistic Minister and Set-Up, and am on the Parish Council. I frequently cook for and serve at the Parish’s monthly Mission Meal with other volunteers. I also assist with teaching the Adult Education class, but I think I learn as much from my peers as they do from me!

Interesting fact about you? I have taken dance lessons of some kind (tap, jazz, ballet, lyrical, clogging) for almost 30 years – first when I was young at Ramona Rose and recently at Rebecca’s Dance Studio. I still love to dance, but it’s difficult to find adult classes – and the time to take them. Dance is one of the few activities that a person can begin when very young and continue through adulthood.
