Hoping to build upon the huge success of last year’s event, GFWC Bridgeport Junior Woman’s Club and Kroger are hosting their second annual “Grocery Grab” shopping spree fundraiser, with all proceeds to benefit area Harrison County Backpack Program participants.

According to GFWC Bridgeport Junior Woman’s Club co-presidents Anna Matheny and Elizabeth Rice McDow, the Bridgeport Juniors are committed to their special project, “Feed Our Future,” and have been actively supporting various backpack programs and school food pantries throughout Harrison County.  “When we saw the statistic last year that roughly 1 in 5 children in Harrison County is food insecure, we knew right away that we wanted to do something to address that.  The backpack programs help make sure these kids are receiving nutritious food when they aren’t in school on weekends and holidays, so we are really excited to build off of last year’s momentum. The event is such a fun way to raise funds and awareness for local food insecurity, and we are incredibly grateful to Kroger for working with us again this year for the benefit of the community.”

“Kroger is delighted to partner with the Bridgeport Junior Woman’s Club,” said Allison McGee, corporate affairs manager for Kroger’s Mid-Atlantic Division.  “The ‘Grocery Grab’ is a wonderful example of how Kroger works with local organizations to end hunger in our communities. Just this month Kroger launched a new initiative, Zero Hunger Zero Waste, to end hunger in the communities we serve.  We believe no one in our communities should ever go hungry, and we developed a plan to make that vision a reality by 2025.  We can’t do it alone; that’s why the work of the Bridgeport Junior Woman’s Club is so important.  Working together makes the world a better place.”

The grand prize winner will be awarded a two-minute grocery shopping spree (some exclusions apply) on November 9th at the Kroger on Emily Drive.  Ten semifinalists will be selected and notified on November 2nd and the grand prize winner will be drawn at Kroger on November 9th immediately prior to the event.  The nine semifinalists will receive prizes as well.

Last year’s grand prize winner, Lawren Sandy (represented by brother Michael Giovanetti), received over $1,000 in groceries.

Tickets are $5 each or 5 for $20, and are available for purchase online at www.bridgeportjuniors.com, the Benedum Civic Center, Lizards and Lollipops Consignment or via any member of the GFWC Bridgeport Junior Woman’s Club.
