It's That Time Again! GFWC Women's Club of Bridgeport Host Golf Tourney
By Julie Perine on June 15, 2012
The club’s fourth annual golf tournament at Bel Meadow Country Club is scheduled for June 30, with a 1 p.m. tee off.
By offering top-notch prizes, like golf at Stonewall Resort for the highest-scoring foursome – or a week in Las Vegas for a hole in one – the ladies are hoping both golfers and business sponsors will get behind their effort, said Co-Organizer Barbara Wilburn.
Registration is open for teams at $70 per golfer, which includes an 11 a.m. lunch of pulled pork barbecue, baked beans, potato salad and dessert.
The three top teams will be awarded with free golf at area courses. Prizes will also be awarded for closest-to-pin and – should anyone be lucky enough – a hole in one. It’s never happened in the history of women’s club golf tourneys, but you never know, Wilburn said. In the event it would, some golfer will be on his way to Las Vegas for a seven-night stay.
A variety of other golf contests, as well as prize drawings, will be ongoing throughout the day.
Sponsorships are welcome at $50 per hole. All funds will combine for some worthy local projects, said club member, Shirley Hadorn.
“We send students each year to HOBY (Hugh O'Brian Youth Leadership) camp and Girls State, as well as conversation camp,” she said. “We sponsor a youth writing contest and also support our local Bridgeport Fire Department and library, as well as the all-sports high school booster club.”
The club also makes regular contributions to HOPE, Inc. Task Force on Domestic Violence and the Salvation Army, among other service organizations.
Annually, around $3,000 is raised through the event.
The tournament is usually patronized by locals, but those from as far away as Texas have played.
“They were here working in oil and gas and just happened to see our sign and called,” Wilburn said.
The ladies are hoping locals call, too. To register, call Wilburn at 304-842-3395 or Brenda Swiger at 304-842-4635.
