Annual Bill Miles Memorial Beeping Easter Egg Hunt for Visually and Hearing Impaired Happening March 24

If you travel to Bridgeport, to a curve in the road where Long Street and Scott Street come together, you will arrive at Compton Park.  There, on Saturday, March 24, 2018, at 2 p.m., members of the Bridgeport Lions Club, headed by Lion Drew Tate, will be conducting an Easter egg hunt for blind and visually impaired children. The Bridgeport Lions Club is teaming up with the GFWC Woman’s Club of Bridgeport members, who are providing treat-filled Easter baskets and refreshments for the event.

This isn’t just any Easter egg hunt. It is one especially designed with beeping eggs for blind children that allows them to hunt for their own eggs. Tate reminisced about the first such Easter egg hunt - which took place approximately 15 years ago - and the looks on the children’s faces when they, for the first time, independently hunted and found their own eggs. Once a child found a beeping egg, they were able to exchange it for an egg filled with candy.

“The joy the kids give us is worth more than the candy we give to them," Tate said.

The egg hunt has become an annual event and the Lions Club invites blind and visually impaired children and their families to join them at Compton Park.

Tate said that the Bridgeport Lions Club is the first Lions Club to hold a beeping Easter egg hunt, thanks to Bill Miles, who is fondly remembered as a creative and innovative Lion.  Miles gathered supplies from Radio Shack and created eggs with beepers inside them. Each year since, the Bridgeport Lions Club has hosted the special event, now named the Bill Miles Memorial Beeping Easter Egg Hunt. Members of the Bridgeport Lions Club have traveled to other clubs in the state and in Ohio to demonstrate the eggs and help them get Easter egg hunts for blind children started in their communities.

Anyone interested in participating can call Tate at 304-842-2320 or 304-838-1393.
