Annual Point-In-Time Homelessness Count Scheduled This Week; Volunteers Needed

By Trina Runner on January 22, 2018 via Connect-Bridgeport.com

Each year, Homes for Harrison conducts a Point-In-Time Count to determine the number of individuals and families that are experiencing homelessness in Harrison County.  Because of the extreme temperatures, the annual assessment takes place each January and assists in finding the reasons for homelessness as well as giving those who help count the opportunity to inform the homeless residents about much needed resources.

As a United Way agency, Homes for Harrison coordinates a street count in order to make sure all areas of the county are assessed.  This year’s county will take place on January 23 from 5:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. and on January 24 from 5:30 a.m. to 10 a.m. The organization is currently seeking volunteers to help with the Point-in-Time Count.

“It is vital that we collect the information on the homeless population each year,” said Bridgeport resident and participant Belynda Kirby.  “The data collected provides direction for future development of service and allows agencies and volunteers to seek funding to provide those services.”

Volunteers will be divided into teams and given a geographic area in which to identify homeless individuals and families.  Those found will be surveyed and linked with resources and services.  For those wishing to volunteer, visit  https://goo.gl/forms/lbcVYq3I7Qb53Ln23 to register.  Also, if anyone is aware of someone living outside, in a car, in an abandoned building or otherwise not meant for human habitation, please contact Homes for Harrison at 304-669-9202.
