City Pool Being Prepared for May 27 Season Opening

Bridgeport city staff has been working diligently to prepare the city pool for the May 27 opening, a traditionally free day of swimming.
Monday morning, Parks and Recreation Director and Deputy Director Don Burton and Joe Shuttleworth checked on the progress. Everything is running right on schedule, they said.

“The center section of the pool needs another coat of paint,” Burton said. “After it dries, we’ll start filling it.”
Not only is the pool interior being freshly painted, but the concrete deck is being cleaned – perhaps as never before.

“They’ve been cleaning the deck with a concrete washer,” Shuttleworth said, referring to a piece of equipment previously purchased for upkeep of Bridgeport Recreation Complex.

Next week, the deck chairs will start being placed and the concession stand stocked. The pool will officially open at 12 noon on Saturday, May 27, with free entry to the pool facility, including the spray ground. The pool will be open through 6 p.m. that day.

The facility will thereafter be open 12-6 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 12:30-6 p.m. Sundays. Family swim nights will be held 7-9 p.m. Thursday and Friday. Admission to family night is $3 for all ages. Lap swim sessions will be held 10-11 a.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays at $2 per session.

Pool admission is $3.50 for children age 3-11, $4.50 for ages 12 and over, $3.50 for seniors age 55 and over. Discount tickets and season passes are currently available for purchase at the office of the Benedum Civic Center.

Sally Hastings of Bridgeport Parks and Recreation said there is still limited availability for swim lessons in the Jellyfish and Sharks classes. Registration opened April 15 with most classes filled that day. Pool rentals have also been completely booked, Hastings said, but the Boy Scout room at the pool facility does have some limited availability for rental.
