After capturing sectional titles on Saturday, Bridgeport High School soccer teams enter the Class AA/A Region 2 tournament this evening at Wayne Jamison Field. Both the boys and girls play Grafton. The boys start the action at 5 p.m. with the Lady Indians taking the turf afterwards. Estimated time is 7 p.m.
The boys earned their spot in this week’s regionals by defeating Notre Dame 1-0 at Clarksburg City Park in Nutter Fort; home field of the Fighting Irish. The contest went into two overtimes before Griffen Moon shot the game’s sole goal.
“We knew it was going to be a difficult game because they have a strong defense and they have Phil (Chafin) who can score with any chance,” said Indians’ Coach Zane Satterfield. “My guys went out and were patient throughout the entire game. They never panicked and stayed composed the whole time. I knew it was going to take a fantastic goal and Griffen Moon got it for us in the second overtime.”
Credit goes to Notre Dame for playing a very smart game, Satterfield said.
Tonight’s regional game against the Bearcats will likewise be challenging, he said.
“We played Grafton during the regular season and lost 4-2. Their forward scored four goals on us in the first half so we went into half time 4-1,” he said. “They are very similar to Notre Dame and RCB, so it should be an exciting game.”
Satterfield said his team has really turned things around since the regular season. Defense has stepped it up, limiting opponents to two or three shots.
“So if they keep that up, we should do well tonight,” he said. “The main thing is to keep focused and calm without focusing too much on the opportunity of going to states. We have to win first.”
The Lady Indians advance to tonight's regional play by defeating Liberty High School 7-1 on BHS turf Saturday. Coach John Reese said he expecting a battle tonight - but that his girls are ready.
