Friday is Last Day to Register for Parks and Recreation Fast Break Basketball League

By Julie Perine on September 12, 2018 via Connect-Bridgeport.com

Bridgeport Parks and Recreation's Fast Break Basketball League begins Thursday, Sept. 20 with player evaluations at Heritage Christian School. Games run Sept. 24 through Nov. 1 at the same location; each team playing 10 officiated games. Registration closes Friday, Sept. 14. Bridgeport Recreation Coordinator Katie Squires encourages players of middle school and high school age to sign up at their earliest convenience. The league is limited to the first 64 players in each age division.

"Stop by the Civic Center or call us by Friday to get signed up," she said. "We are also in need of volunteers to coach teams. Anyone interested can let us know when they sign up or give us a call at 304-842-8240."

For those planning to try out for school teams, the program serves as a good pre-season activity and feedback indicates that players have a lot of fun with the league. For those who have played recreation leagues as kids, but don’t want to play school ball, it’s a good alternative.

"That's true especially for kids who come up through our K-3 program and play Jerry West, staying active for all that time and then aging out of the program," Shuttleworth said. "They hit this middle school/high school age group and that's where a lot of kids tend to drop off organized sports because they don't want to play school teams or don't make their school teams. This helps them stay active."

The real goal is truly recreation, Shuttleworth said.

"We just want to provide a fun opportunity for kids to get moving, play a team sport and have fun," he said. "We do our best to try to create team parity and include everyone."

The Sept. 20 evaluations will begin at 6 p.m. with middle school evaluations. High School evaluations will start around 7 p.m.*

Those interested in serving as volunteer coaches can also indicate so on the registration form.

Prior to game season, teams will have short practice seasons, Shuttleworth said.

Middle school games will be held on Tuesday and Thursday evenings and high school games on Monday and Wednesday evenings. Registration is $85 per player. That includes a team T-shirt.

Registration forms are being distributed through local schools this week, Squires said. They are also available at the Benedum Civic Center or can be downloaded HERE. For more information, call Bridgeport Parks & Recreation at 304-842-8240.

*Editor's Note: If location of evaluations changes, players and coaches will be advised.
