Johnson Elementary Pre-K Learning about Community with Hands-On Approach

The Pre-K program of Johnson Elementary is taking a unique new approach to introducing young students to their community.

Starting this month, the Pre-K classrooms will be transformed into a virtual downtown Bridgeport featuring photos of various Main Street establishments. Teachers Jessica Jones and Miranda Miller have arranged to bring in guest speakers, business owners and others who represent the core of our community.

“We want them to grow up to contribute to their community, so we thought it was good to introduce them to that sort of thing at a young age,” Jones said. “We want to make them aware of what is in downtown Bridgeport and encourage their parents to shop at the different businesses.”

One of the first presenters will be Ian Thokar of Bridgeport ATA Martial Arts. He will not only talk about classes offered at his business, but also provide a karate demonstration. That is sure to get the children’s attention and pump them up for a series of speakers which will continue during the next couple of months.

Those scheduled to date include a pediatrician, First Energy employee, police and fire personnel, among others. Some will be bringing vehicles and other equipment to show students more about how their professional roles fit into the workings of the community.

The program is a continuation of one started at the beginning of the school year and one Jones hopes will develop into a regular Pre-K curriculum.

“Our goal is to eventually study the entire state of West Virginia,” she said. “At the start of school, we talked about going to different parts of the state and bringing back information to share. Now, we’re focusing on the local community.”

Miller said it’s also important to include pictures of Bridgeport’s downtown.

“We want to familiarize the kids with these businesses, what they are and what hey do for our community,” she said.

It's easy, Miller said, for any of us to drive across the Main Street corridor and not pay attention to what all is there. She hopes the kids will recognize businesses now and want to visit regularly.

Between the classes, there are 37 students.
