If there is a theme to Monday night’s Bridgeport City Council meeting, it is property purchase.

 

Scheduled to be discussed is the city's potential purchase of property in two areas of Bridgeport.

 

The first, located on Route 131, just across from the Bridgeport Recreation Complex entrance, has been in discussion for quite some time. Monday night, the first reading of an ordinance authorizing the purchase of that property – 5.50 acres currently owned by the Benedum Airport Authority – will take place.

 

At a July 19 meeting of the airport authority, it was reported that the property had been appraised for $247,500 and that a contract had been executed for the purchase of the property and awaited approval of the Federal Aviation Administration. Proposed use for the property is city storage and overflow parking.

Also taking place Monday night is the first reading of an ordinance to authorize purchase of two lots located on Worthington Drive. If passed, the ordinance would provide authority to Mayor Andy Lang and City Manager Kim Haws to take part in contract negotiations for the property, located at 116 and 124 Worthington Drive. Both properties are located on lower Worthington Drive near the Virginia Avenue intersection. City Clerk Andrea Kerr said the proposed purchase of the property is not being disclosed at this time.

 

A capital reserve fund budge revision is scheduled to authorize funds for the property purchases if they are approved.

 

Also Monday night, a proclamation will be presented to WBOY-TV to note the station’s 60^th year of providing news to the area and region.

 

“WBOY is celebrating 60 years in our area, which is recognition worthy,” said Kerr. “They are very prevalent in our area, a good partner with the city and we know they are proud of their accomplishments - as they should be.”

 

Police Chief John Walker will present a traffic pattern report for Johnson Elementary School. School starts Tuesday in Harrison County and as nearby construction of a new Johnson Elementary is underway, school officials and law enforcement want to keep the lines of communication open regarding parking and traffic in the school zone. Also slated for Monday’s agenda is the appointment of Council Member Lowell Maxey to the Bridgeport Senior Citizens Board. A representative of Council was requested by the organization and Maxey obliged to serve in that capacity, said Kerr.

 

A housekeeping issue will also be taken care of Monday night: The first reading of an ordinance to approve and adopt current replacement pages to the Codified Ordinances.  

 

“We have to send Walter Drane a list of our ordinances passed throughout the fiscal year because they host our codified ordinances,” Kerr said. “This just shows what ordinances have been passed for the year and will be added to our ordinance books as well as online.”

 

Monday's 7 p.m. meeting will open with an invocation by Nathaniel Lutyens of Bridgeport High School/Harrison County Young Life. The meeting will be preceded by a 6:15 work session during which time the proposed property purchases will be discussed.
