Off the Shelf: Once Upon a Time Sets the Theme for Summer Reading

By Sharon Saye on May 17, 2017 via Connect-Bridgeport.com

Summer Reading 2017 is almost upon us.  This year’s theme is “Once Upon a Time,” and it focuses on American history from Colonial days to the Civil Rights movement.

Registration begins on Thursday, June 1st, and the kick-off program, “Summer Reading Preamble,” is Thursday, June 8th.  Registered summer reading participants are eligible to win prizes and attend programs.  Please register early as programs reach maximum capacity quickly.  At time of registration, participants are given a packet containing reading lists, activity sheets and calendars of events.

Registration for children requires the presence of an adult with a Bridgeport Public Library card; the adult and teen summer reading programs also require participants have a library card.  Registration for programs begins June 15th.

The children’s summer reading program is designed for children ages 4-12; events are color coded yellow on the library’s calendar of events.  Programs are generally offered on Wednesdays at noon and Thursdays at 6 p.m. with some exceptions.

The teen reading program is designed for ages 13-19 and their events are color coded green on the calendar of events.  Their programs are offered on Mondays at 6 p.m. with some exceptions.  The Summer Reading Program for Adults is welcome to ages 19+ and their events are color coded blue.  Their programs are offered on various days of the week.

Additional programs for participants of all ages are scheduled on Fridays at noon and are color coded purple.  They include Harriet Tubman provided by History Alive on June 30th, a 1920s Cosplay Party featuring dance by Artie and Eileen Frank on July 7th and a Finale Block Party on Thursday, July 20th at 6 p.m.

Recommended reading and interactive programs revolve around six selected eras in US history with special emphasis on diversity:  Week 1, June 8-16th – Colonies and Revolution; Week 2, June 19-23rd, Native Culture/Trail of Tears; Week 3, June 26-30th, Slavery/Underground Railroad/Civil War; Week 4, July 3-7th, Gilded Age/The Great Wave/Women’s Suffrage; Week 5, July 10-14th, World War II/Japanese American Internment; and Week 6, July 17-20th, Civil Rights.

The library’s staff hopes you enjoy your time at the library this summer.  We invite you to read with us, join our film discussions, and learn something new at our programs.
