The year may be winding down for Bridgeport High School seniors, but their achievements are being publicly recognized after four years of hard work. Twenty BHS seniors were awarded scholarships at the 27th Annual Harrison County Student Achievement Awards Banquet on Sunday, April 29 at Robert C. Byrd High School.
Gary Bowden welcomed the crowd of students, teachers, administrators, counselors and parents, noting the tradition of the awards ceremony and the importance of community involvement alongside academic endeavors. Pastor Robin Ray of Bridgeport Presbyterian Church gave an overview of the criteria for the Student Achievement program, followed by the Davis-Jackson Alumni Award Recipient Jim Hunt, who served as the Keynote Speaker.
Hunt is the first alumni of Notre Dame to receive the Davis-Jackson Award and is a local businessman, author and politician. His presentation encouraged students to set goals, love where they live and to travel and embrace experiences.
Each year, the Harrison County Student Achievement Board of Directors reviews hundreds of applications from students throughout the county. Excellence in academics, community service and arts and humanities are considered for the scholarship opportunities, which have totaled over half a million dollars since its inception in 1992.
