After Nearly Two Decades at BHS, Young Life Continues to Impact Local Teens; Upcoming Banquet Tickets Available Now

Having a new baby didn’t stop Young Life leaders Nathaniel and Gina Lutyens from their annual trip to Rockbridge, VA this year. In fact, it gave them many willing helpers during the week as they celebrated with 114 local Young Life members at the summer camps designed to enrich the spiritual lives of youth.

Those who have been involved with the annual camp, and with Young Life in general, are quick to count the experiences among the best in high school.  The outreach of the organization continues to grow in Harrison County and beyond, with meetings currently held at Bridgeport High School, Bridgeport Middle School, Lincoln High School, Lincoln Middle School, and Robert C. Byrd High School. They also host programs catering to diverse cultural communities, those with economic struggles, physical and mental disabilities and even children from military families.

“This year at Rockbridge, we were able to disconnect from the outside world and focus on fun, spiritual growth and deep connections with one another,” said Lutyens.  “It would not have been possible without the support of the parents, schools and communities that have continued to contribute to make the trip possible each year.”

The Lutyens family has consistently been involved with the students of Harrison County through sports, community activities and meetings, making it a full-time immersion in developing the faith of teens in the area.  By encouraging students and their families to continue to grow spiritually, they provide a safe, comforting environment that is very much needed during the teen years.

Local clubs include outreach and social events as well as the Campaigners Bible Studies, both of which will be starting soon.  The organization is free and open to any student interested in being involved.

“Our vision is to give every kid a chance to know Jesus and we are seeking to expand our ministry into new schools and communities,” said Lutyens.  “We started at BHS in 1998 and the organization has been blessed with many students who have pursued additional career opportunities with Young Life after having such a positive experience themselves.”

Now starting their 19th year at BHS, the leaders have high hopes for expanding the outreach program and for raising funds to allow more students to attend the summer camps for Wyldlife and Young Life.  One of the main fundraisers is the annual Young Life Banquet to be held at Bridgeport Conference Center on Sunday, September 17 at 5:30p.m.  Each year, the group counts on sponsors to purchase tables and/or tickets that allow parents and community members to see first-hand how much Young Life impacts the lives of local teens.

“We always look forward to the banquet.  The students have the opportunity to share their experiences with Young Life and get another chance to connect and celebrate the lessons they learned over the summer,” said Lutyens.  “Tickets and information are available by contacting Carla Yaquinta at 304-629-8746 or by visiting the Young Life Harrison County Facebook page.”
