Having just graduated from Bethany College, Bridgeport’s Jerrica Staten is walking away with an award that hasn’t been given for the last five years because the professors didn’t find a worthy recipient.  Staten, however, has proven to be more than worthy of receiving the Wheeling-Nisshin Japanese Culture Award, given in recognition of students who spread awareness and education of Japanese culture.

“We had a group of Japanese exchange students who visited Bethany’s campus this year and they did not speak much English,” said Staten.  “We gave them a tour and translated for them throughout their entire visit.”

Additionally, Staten was instrumental in the success of Yakisoba Nights, a celebration held each semester where the Japanese Culture class makes a special dish for the entire campus.  After taking the class as a freshman, Staten has been active in promoting Japanese culture throughout campus for the remainder of her time at Bethany.

Staten immersed herself in various Japanese traditions such as cooking, flower arranging, and a deeper understanding of the language and culture.  Her efforts were recognized with a ceremony in which she was awarded a certificate and trophy as the first recipient of the Wheeling-Nisshin Japanese Culture Ward in the last five years.

“I have always been interested and fascinated by the Japanese traditions and I am truly honored to be the recipient of this award,” said Staten.  “Being able to promote diversity has been a privilege and one day, I hope to visit Japan and learn even more.”
