We have all seen it on television.  Detectives and legal aspects working on a crime scene, analyzing the evidence and interpreting the repercussions, both legally and morally.  One BHS Sophomore will be immersing himself in such scenarios at the 2018 National Youth Leadership Forum: Law and CSI program to be held next summer in Washington, D.C.

 

Jacob Isner was selected to attend the prestigious forum, representing the state of West Virginia in the intensive legal experience.  As part of around 300 students chosen nationwide, he will be attending a six-day educational program which will offer hands-on experience in forensics and various aspects of the law.

 

“We will have the opportunity to explore careers in the legal field and to analyze evidence in crime scene simulations,” Isner said.  “We will be part of a role play scenario where each of us will portray the role of prosecutor, defense attorney, or witness as the crime scene is sent to trial.”

 

The nation’s capital will serve as a living classroom for the group of high school students.  They will visit a local courthouse, meet a panel of top professionals from Washington law firms, participate in a Supreme Court activity, use technology for investigative purposes, and explore legal and forensics career paths.

 

Last year’s National Youth Leadership Forum included nearly 400 of the country’s best and brightest students who each had an interest in the law.  Representing 46 states, the group dove into networking with other students and professionals and formed a foundation for their future careers.  Because of the diversity among the students, each one learned tolerance and acceptance of those with different political views, socio-economic backgrounds, and opinions.

 

The National Youth Leadership Forum has been held in Washington, D.C. since 1995 and is aimed at young people who are deciding on colleges and careers in law.  Local and nationally known experts are invited to moderate the forums and present to the students.  Through mock trials, small group problem solving scenarios, and large group interactive workshops, the students discuss the hard issues facing the nation today.

 

Isner was chosen as a West Virginia representative because of is superior character and grade point average.  He was first nominated by Bridgeport Middle School Counselor Mary Shields.  Her recommendation allowed him to attend a week-long science camp at Glenville State University, where he focused on chemistry.  His mentor from that camp has advised him as he applied for additional opportunities and his teachers, family and friends have proven to be very encouraging in his activities such as Drug Free Club, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, and BHS Football.

 

For his week-long stay in Washington, Isner plans to use his interest in science to learn the ins and outs of crime scene investigations and learn more about potential careers, colleges and the Judicial system in general.  Because the tuition cost will be around $2500, Isner is currently seeking sponsors to help fund the experience.  Those interested can contact him at jacobisner65@gmail.com.
