BHS Students Among Those Participating in "A Night Without A Home" to Raise Awareness and Donations for Homeless

As the weather gets colder, the mall gets more crowded in anticipation of the holidays.  There are those who visit the farms and pick fresh apples or exchange recipes for Thanksgiving dishes.  The homeless, however, get colder and hungrier as resources often slack off in the winter months.

On Nov. 4, student members of Bridgeport High School DECA will join fellow DECA members from Lincoln High School and Marion County Technical Center to pay homage to the homeless plight in our area.  For the third year in a row, Marion County Technical Center Marketing teacher Kathy Lupo will host A Night Without a Home from 6 p.m. to midnight in the parking lot of Marion County Technical Center.

“Each year, we try to raise awareness of the homelessness in our area,” said Lupo.  “We stay outside in a cardboard village that simulates everyday life for some of the local homeless people.  We collect canned goods and clothing to donate to local charities in order to help with some of the issues faced by those without a home.”

The student groups will be handing out hot chocolate and soup to those who donate and collections are set up on site or at any of the high schools.  Food, clothing, personal care items, toiletries and first aid products are all welcome and donations are tax-deductible.

As the holidays approach, A Night Without a Home gives students the opportunity to help those less fortunate and to raise awareness of an issue that affects so many in North Central West Virginia.  For more information on the event, contact Trina Runner at trinarunner@gmail.com.
