Trey Martin has been hitting the slopes since he was three years old.  Now, the Bridgeport Middle Schooler is heading to Colorado to showcase his skills among the best of the best in the nation at the United States of America Snowboard and Freeski Association (NCASA) National Championships to be held at Copper Mountain, Colorado April 7-12.

“Trey has always gravitated to the terrain park slopes,” said his mother, Stacy Martin.  “Those slopes have a variety of features on them such as rails, ice boxes and jumps.  Those who compete on them are considered to be freestyle skiers that compete in slopestyle events.”

For the last several years, Martin has competed at Snowshoe Mountain Resort, winning the West Virginia Open Youth Division (ages 15 and younger).  Since Snowshoe doesn’t have a Freestyle Team, his skills have been self-taught through watching YouTube videos and practicing on the slopes and on the trampoline.

He became a member of the NCASA and the United States Ski and Snowboard Association (USSA), which both host sanctioned events to compete on a regional level.  Trey did extremely well throughout the season, generally placing in the top three in the region.  As a USSA member, he was ranked 20th on the East Coast and was invited to the Eastern Division Championships in Maine.

He declined the invitation in hopes of receiving a bid to the USASA National Competition, which he received last week, ranking him 40th in the nation out of 189 competitors.  With sponsorships from First Tracts Real Estate, Snowshoe Mountain and the Pocahontas Convention and Visitors Bureau, Trey will compete among the best in the country in the Slopestyle Freeski Youth Division (ages 14-15) in Colorado in April.

“We are so excited for Trey and proud of all the hard work that led to this opportunity,”said his mother, Stacy.
