Thirteen Bridgeport High School students were selected to attend the American Legion Rhododendron Girls State and Davis and Elkins College in Elkins the week of June 9-14. Upon arriving, to the 77thsession of Girls State, the young became part of a legacy of citizenship training that has reached nearly 30,000 girls since its inception.
After meeting the other attendees from around the state, speakers encouraged the young ladies to celebrate their self-worth and use their gifts to serve others through volunteerism and community involvement.

An overview of the Federalist and Nationalist parties was presented, as well as details of how city, county and state government works.

Throughout the week, the girls were divided into groups that included editorial staff for the Rhododendron Daily, Chorus, Public Speaking, and Public Safety.  They also attended workshops on financial literacy and preparations for college.

West Virginia Secretary of State Mac Warner spoke to the congregation about the importance of registering to vote and how his office helps regulate elections.  Afterwards, each girl had the opportunity to file for offices within their government.

Ceremonies are an important part of citizenship and the girls learned and performed several, including daily flag ceremonies, POW/MIA ceremonies, and the table setting for military children which honors their sacrifices.

West Virginia State Treasurer John Perdue encouraged students to be financially responsible and provided resources that will help them navigate finances through the various stages of life.  Following his presentation, the primary election polls opened, followed by the official gubernatorial debates.

Mid-week events included Federalists and Nationalists parades, a college fair, and recognition of the outstanding citizens.  Presentations by Senators Shelley Moore Capito and Joe Manchin highlighted the week and were followed by the announcement of Girls State Senators, scholarship awards and a talent show.

“Joe Manchin’s speech was very inspiring,” said Madie Wilson.  “My favorite part of Girl’s State, however, was meeting people from all over the state and learning to get outside my comfort zone to help others.”

Bridgeport participants included Abbie Alfred, Jordan Barrick, Addie Boggs, Sophia Duarte, Jenna Gallo, Abby Jeffers, Maria Lacaria, Hannah Povroznik, Lindsey Suter, Shelby Whiteman, Kyler Randolph, and Josie Reep. and Madie Wilson. Not all are pictured above.
