Free Academic Resources are Available to Students at BHS through March2Success Program

When a group of uniformed military officers enter the library during a routine faculty meeting, people tend to sit up straight and pay close attention to what they have to say.  On October 6, Bridgeport High School welcomed Robert Kowal, Captain Jason Polglaze, and Staff Sergeant  Lewie Andrew to their meeting, all in the name of giving BHS students another opportunity to succeed.

The idea came about when Assistant Principal Renee Mathews, whose family has a lengthy military background, was talking to Captain Polglaze at church one day.  From that conversation, Mathews introduced the March2Success program that is designed to help high school students utilize free resources that can improve testing and academics.  The program is available nationwide and all high school students in Harrison County are privy to the resources.

“The program includes a self-paced online test preparation program sponsored by the United States Army,” said Polglaze.  “Materials, videos, and competency building lessons are available and free of charge to anyone over the age of 13.”

Regardless of post-graduate plans, March2Success is designed to give sample tests and testing tips for those taking the ACT, SAT, or ASVAB tests.  It teaches study skills, helps with the college admissions process and offers financial aid assistance.

“Because BHS will be taking the SAT as our end of year assessment now, this program offers valuable resources to help the students become more successful and prepare for the test in the spring,” said Mathews.

The interactive format of March2Success is very engaging for students and uses enhanced technological applications, tutoring resources and drag-and-drop activities.

“The program is a great resource for students, as it is designed to be relevant to them and current with national standards,” said Polglaze. “It also has math and verbal skills courses with more practice tests and a personalized learning plan for grades 8-10.”

BHS is fortunate to also have local Army recruiter Matthew Ward to be available for classroom presentations on topics such business, suicide prevention, teamwork, career exploration and more.  He and the rest of the staff can direct faculty to resources such as flashcards, progress monitoring tools, and training students to take timed tests for optimal scores.

Since 2003, the March2Success program has been utilized by over 57,000 parents and educators and over 1.2 million students, making it the number one educational outreach tool used by the U.S. Army.  The tools available are useful for all members of any military branch as well as students who may attend college or technical training.

“We are committed to helping students succeed after high school and we are very appreciative that Bridgeport High School has embraced the March2Success program and plans to utilize this valuable resource,” said Polglaze.
