When it comes to getting a quality education in West Virginia, Harrison County is proving to be one of the best places to get an education. At least it is according to a recent ranking done by Backgroundchecks.org.

Only one other school system in West Virginia ranked higher in the local area. Monongalia County came in second place in the rankings.

The site, which describes itself as “a public safety focused organization committed to increasing public safety, community involvement, and education” used several criteria in ranking the school systems. Among the items utilized were funding for schools, dropout rates, overall test ratings in math and reading, level of poverty among others.

So who is the top school? According to the site, Putnam County is West Virginia’s top-ranked public school system. They are followed Monongalia County, Ohio County, Jefferson County and Harrison County.

Marion County just missed the top five with a sixth place finish. Gilmer County is the only other area district ranked as they came in at No. 10.

Harrison County was described as being one of the larger county school districts in West Virginia. It has 25 schools in its system. Four of those public schools – Bridgeport High, Bridgeport Middle and Johnson and Simpson Elementary Schools – are part of the group.

Dr. Mark Manchin was thrilled with the news.

“It’s a reflection of the hard work and dedication of our employees because you’re only as good as your employees. You take the quality of instruction, the teachers, the support of our communities and the dedication of our students and it’s a combination for success,” he said. “I was certainly pleased, but now I want to make sure we don’t rest on our laurels and next time be at the top of the list.”

Backgroundchecks.org does multiple lists. Education topics, including college, are frequently ranked.
