On the tails of the Harrison County Theatre Awards comes an opportunity for the next generation of stars to learn from the masters.  For the sixth year in a row, Harrison County Schools will host Summer Theatre Camp for students of Harrison County.    Robert C. Byrd High School will be this year’s site for the Summer Theatre Camp, where instructors will coveracting, singing, dancing, tech, lighting, stage management, makeup and scenery.  The camp is completely free to all Harrison County students, regardless of if they attend public or private school or are homeschooled.

The hands-on camp is slated for June 17-21, with those in third through fifth grade attending from 10:00a.m. to 11:30a.m. and those in grades 6-12 attending from 11:30a.m. to 2:00p.m. Students will rotate through various workshops to ensure a cross-section of theatrical aspects.  Lunch will be provided by Harrison County Schools and, on Friday, all students will arrive by 10:00a.m. for a closing celebration.

Unlike previous years, this year’s camp, with a “This is Me” theme, will feature a small presentation for parents and family on Friday.  They will also take a trip to the Robinson Grand for a personal tour with scheduled activities and lunch.

“We want to honor the diversity of the theatre by offering opportunities for all students to experience time both backstage and in front of an audience,” said Becky Mearns, one of five coordinators of the camp.  “Theatre becomes like a family for many students and we want to make the camp enjoyable for each person attending.”

In addition to Mearns, Ashely Coley, Michelle Graham, Gabe Rhodes and Bridgeport High School’s Jared St. Martin Brown will be coordinating all events.  Online registration is available by visiting harcotheatre@gmail.comand students can also register on-site on the first day of camp.
