It's Go Time: BHS Boys Soccer Hits the Road to Charleston Catholic

BHS Boys Soccer gets the season underway Saturday with a 1 p.m. away game against Charleston Catholic.

“They’re one of the best - if not the best team in the state,” said Coach Danny Hamrick. “It’s a tough game for opening up, but it will help us gauge where we are so that we can work to be one of the best teams.”

Tuesday’s scrimmage against Morgantown was also instrumental in that process.

BHS lost 1-0, but overall, Hamrick believes his team performed pretty well.

“Obviously, you scrimmage to see some things you need to clean up and we’ve worked hard this week doing that. Hopefully we’ve gotten some things straightened out,” he said.

There were some specific skills and drills included in that clean-up.

“We worked on moving off the ball – anticipating instead of reacting. We have a bad habit of waiting to see where the ball will be played instead of anticipating. And it slows us down,” Hamrick said. “We also need to pass the ball quicker and shorter.”

Also tossed into the mix is a new formation, which is taking players some time to become oriented with field position.

“It’s still experimental right now, but it fits us better and eventually we should be very good at it,” he said.

Hamrick is looking for his defensive line – Trevor Moon, Logan Lang, Matt Whiteman and Matt Chesler - to step up in Saturday’s contest.
“If they can play good enough, we’ll have enough fire power to score a goal or two,” he said.

Offensively, Brandon Hanlan’s performance is key.

“He has as good of a shot as anyone in the state – with either foot, he hits very hard,” Hamrick said.

Holding forward Jesse Hamrick is also instrumental to the game’s outcome.

“His job mainly is to distribute the ball to the other forwards or the midfielders coming through making runs,” Hamrick said. “If we can get the ball to his feet and make a proper run, we stand a chance of scoring two or three goals tomorrow and against Charleston Catholic – that’s almost unheard of.”

Hamrick is assisted on the varsity team by Keith Dumas. Dumas coaches the JV team and Hamrick serves as assistant.

The varsity team roster is below.
