Opportunity to Win $10,000 to High School Students in 5th Annual High School Business Plan Competition

By Trina Runner on November 06, 2017 via Connect-Bridgeport.com

In November of 2016, former BHS student Christina Guirguis began her journey that ultimately awarded her with a $10,000 scholarship to West Virginia University.  The opportunity is now open for current juniors and seniors around the Mountain State.  The West Virginia High School Business Plan Competition is now in its fifth year and each year the entries get more innovative.

The BrickStreet Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship at WVU, headed by Bridgeport resident Steve Cutright, sets the stage each year to offer this unique opportunity to high school students around the state.  Partnering with the West Virginia Department of Education, the center encourages entrepreneurial pitches that will contribute to the state’s economy and provide employment for residents.

Guirguis’ winning entry was a food truck serving French fries with gourmet toppings, but past winners have introduced products and services that focus on sustainability, hospitality, and more. Judges are actual potential investors and the finalists will be chosen on the December 1 deadline.  The top ten finalists in the state will be paired with professional business coaches to complete extensive business plans and will compete for the $10,000 on March 17 at WVU.

Students at Bridgeport High School will have a presentation about the West Virginia High School Business Plan Competition next week and additional information can be found at wvde.state.wv.us/hsbpc.  The initial entry must have the business name and description, a marketing analysis, a financial summary and a SWOT analysis.  Local business and marketing teachers, as well as counselors, have additional information as well.
