Out of Nearly 30,000 Students, BHS Alum Grant Duvall Named One of 12 Honors College Ambassadors

When West Virginia University announced its new class of Honors College Ambassadors, one Bridgeport High School standout was among those selected.  Grant Duvall, who graduated among the top in his class last Spring, was awarded the opportunity to serve the students who are currently in the WVU Honors College.

The WVU Honors College is dedicated to enhancing the undergraduate experience for high-achieving students.  Like Duvall, each student in the college had to have a high GPA, including Honors-eligible credit hours and projects, and a qualifying score on their ACT or SAT.

Those who are accepted are permitted to have priority scheduling, peer leadership and community service opportunities, and smaller class sizes.  They are also encouraged to live in the Honors housing and have advisors, tutors and mentors on hand.

For Duvall, the experience of living in the Honors Dorm and being a part of the Honors College has elevated his experience as a Freshman at WVU.  As a Biology major with an emphasis in Neuroscience and an Addiction Studies Minor, the benefits offered through the program have been instrumental in helping him maintain his grade point average while also networking with students from all over the world.

In his first semester, he joined the Neuroscience Club, the Pre-Med Club and became a leadWELL peer mentor to encourage healthy lifestyle changes to fellow students.  He also became a member of the National Tutoring Association and was chosen to be in the Rhododendron Chapter of the National Residence Hall Honorary (NRHH).  Through the organization, he will help plan events for those living in WVU housing and help create a positive living and learning climate for residents.

In September, West Virginia University began to search for candidates for its Honors College Ambassador Program and Duvall was more than qualified for the role.  Those selected will participate in off-campus college fairs, on-campus recruitment events, host tours and overnight experiences for upcoming students and assist with early move-in.  They will also be honored in a ceremony, and have a paid position during their tenure.

Through his position as an ambassador, Duvall will represent the Honors College and build his resume with activities that benefit the college community as a whole.  He will be regarded as a leader and further develop his communication and leadership skills and have additional opportunities to serve and have fun among the other students chosen.

“I am honored to have been chosen to serve in this capacity, as it enables me to positively influence the lives of WVU students,” said Duvall.  “I am fortunate that I have the opportunity to impact current and future Mountaineers and share my experiences with them.  I love West Virginia University and all that if offers and I am excited to be part of the Honors Ambassador team.”

Although WVU boasts nearly 30,000 students, only twelve were chosen as ambassadors, putting Duvall among the best and the brightest at the university.  He will be inducted into the NRHH in late January and will held swear new members in at the annual recognition banquet.  He and his fellow ambassadors are committed to serving and leading the residents of honors housing in every aspect of college life.
