Traffic Plan, in Written and Picture Form, Released for 2017 Year for School Zone on Johnson Avenue

Last Thursday, a classroom in the current Johnson Elementary School looked had enough officials in it that for a casual observer walking by they may have thought something important was going on. For students and parents of those attending Johnson Elementary – or for that matter Bridgeport High School or Bridgeport Middle School – it was important.

Bridgeport Police were there. The Johnson Elementary Administration was there. As were administrators from BHS and BMS.

Add to that several representatives from the Harrison County Board of Education, the Superintendent of Harrison County Schools and officials with City Construction and you had the entire who’s who of those involved in the construction of the new Johnson Elementary School. And the gathering wasn’t to update the progress on the new school.

Rather, it was to come up with a complete plan on everything related to traffic, parking patterns, bus routes and more as it relates to how the construction will impact what has been for years a sometimes gridlocked situation that last in drop-off and pickup times for students.

During the meeting, those on hand said they would do their best to come up with a finalized plan – including a written plan and a visual one – well before school started August 15. On Monday, JES Assistant Principal Heather Holbert came through as promised.

Holbert submitted to various individuals the written plan for parents to follow. There is also an accompanying graphic to show how all things will work once school starts August 15.

Those on hand tried to figure out everything that could possibly happen when crafting the plan. However, those in attendance admitted that there could be unforeseen things taking place and that could lead to a modification if needed. And if needed, that modification would also be shared.

Johnson Principal Vicki Huffman believes the plan should work. She said the real issue early one will be getting used to it.

“After a couple of weeks, at worst, we hope everything runs smoothly,” said Huffman.
