Healthy Kids First: Healthiest Dairy Products- We Have Them!

By Mandy Curry on October 29, 2012 from Healthy Kids First

This month we are tackling the healthiest products at the grocery store.  We kicked our series off with a healthy list of breads.   This week we’re taking on milk, yogurt, and butter.  A simple stroll past the yogurt aisle is pretty intimidating.  We’re excited to bring a little clarity to your next trip.

Keep in mind that our goal is not to bash the competition (or even name them), we’re simply pointing out what makes our featured brand a little superior to the others.

When buying milk, it’s important to look for organic, low-fat (or nonfat) milk.  Our goal is to avoid any milk that may contain artificial hormones.  This article gives you more details on organic vs. regular milk.

We found a winner in Homestead Creamery.  This milk contains no artificial hormones.  While price did not factor into our decision, this milk costs only $2.99/half gallon and you will receive a $2 refund when the glass jar is returned back to your local Kroger store.  Homestead Creamery has a great taste and it’s a little fun to take a step back in the past with a glass jar.  Homestead Creamery is unique to Kroger, so if you can’t find this brand at your local grocer, then stick with the above guidance and opt for any organic, low fat milk.

When buying yogurt, Greek is preferred.  It’s best to stick with plain or vanilla (with no added sugars).  Keep in mind that you can always add a little honey or fresh fruits to flavor your yogurt up a bit.

In this category, any brand that fits the above works so we opted for an inexpensive Kroger brand yogurt.

OVERWHELMING sums up the butter section of the grocery store.  When choosing butter, it’s best to look for butter with 50 calories or less per serving.  Land O’Lakes hit the list of top picks.

This is another spread that received thumbs up from the Dietitian.   While it contains a little more fat than the other brands, it’s a good heart healthy spread full of good fats.

So you now have preferred breads, milk, yogurt, and butter for your next trip to the store.  It’s amazing what a little bit of knowledge will do to simplify your next trip to the grocery store.  See you back again next week as we conquer breakfast foods.
