Bridgeport Fire Department and Police personnel responded to a single vehicle accident Thursday that resulted in the driver of the vehicle being transported to United Hospital Center for treatment, according to Fire Chief Phil Hart.

The call went out on Harrison County 911 at 11:18 a.m. Thursday. Emergency personnel responded to a vehicle accident with injury.

Officials on the scene said the driver was an elderly female. A medical issue may have led to the wreck, according to reports.

The wreck took place on East Main Street, or U.S. Route 50 West, near the Heritage Nursing Home (formerly Maplewood). The vehicle, a blue Subaru, struck metal poles just off the roadway with enough impact that the driver side air bag deployed.

Hart said the accident backed up traffic for more than a half an hour along the busy stretch of roadway. Bridgeport Police on the scene helped handle the traffic flow.

The incident is being investigated by the Bridgeport Police Department.  Officer K.D. Wariner is handling the investigation.

The vehicle was removed from the scene by Dan Riggs Towing.
