BHS's First Color Guard Prepares for a Year of Leadership

For those who attended the Bridgeport High School Homecoming game, the beginning of the game marked a first for the school.  Although BHS students have been a part of the JROTC program at Robert C. Byrd High School for several years, it was the first time the members of BHS Color Guard presented on their home field.

The partnership with RCB High School JROTC program began in 2015 and Bridgeport student participation has grown each year.  The program is not only applicable to those interested in careers in the military, it also instills leadership, discipline, and comradery among its members.

After seeing the transformative nature of the JROTC program in a previous position, BHS teacher Stephanie Cochran agreed to sponsor the Color Guard as they organize and recruit for a potential JROTC program of their own in the future.

“I have seen the effect the JROTC program has on students, how proud they are to be presenting the colors for their battalion,” said Cochran.  “I am excited to see how we can make this program grow at BHS and the new Color Guard is a wonderful start to the process.”

Members of the JROTC Color Guard include Jared Gigurere, Carson Bond, Sean Coleman, Dylan Murphy, Alex Rajjoub, Chloe Kester, Maelee Mankins, Sidney Myers, Kanoe Huihui, Landon Burns, Alexander Titchnell, Jacob Swiger, Trey Gulley and Isaiah Dytzel.

The BHS Color Guard plans to present color at different sporting events, including the playoff games if the BHS team is awarded home field advantage.  They also would like to lead the Bridgeport High School Marching Band in parades, the first of which will be the Bridgeport Christmas Parade on December 1.

Additionally, the BHS Color Guard would like to offer to present colors at other school functions and even demonstrate the process to students at Bridgeport Middle School in order to spark interest in the JROTC program.

“We would love to be involved in community events such as Light Up Night and have the underclassmen trained to be able to present colors at the 2019 Bridgeport High School graduation ceremony,” said Cochran.
