BHS's Nicewarner Submits Resignation Letter to BOE for Tribe Football Coaching, Liberty Teaching Jobs

Last week, Harrison County Superintendent of Schools Dr. Mark Manchin said he fully anticipated that Bridgeport High School football Coach and Liberty High School teacher Josh Nicewarner would resign from both positions. Manchin’s hunch was correct.

According to Manchin, Nicewarner has turned in a signed resignation letter to the Harrison County School Board. Now, the only matter is for the elected Board of Education to accept it.

Barring something unusual, that will take place tomorrow morning sometime after 9 a.m. It is at that time that a personnel hearing was scheduled for Nicewarner as part of what Manchin called “due process” in the matter.

“It won’t be a hearing now, per se, but we will at that time present the letter of resignation to the Board for them to act on. I fully expect that the Board will accept the resignation,” said Manchin. “I also don’t expect (Nicewarner) to be in attendance and at that point that will be the end of the matter from the school side of things.”

The resignation comes after Nicewarner was arrested on July 21 and charged with two felony counts. The charges were attempted solicitation of a minor using a computer and the attempted solicitation of a minor using obscene material. The minor in question was a 14-year-old female.

With the resignation comes the end of Nicewarner’s time with the BHS football program and in the LHS classroom. As the coach, Nicewarner spent 14 years with the program and seven as the head coach.

The hearing, or meeting, to discuss the resignation letter and act on it will take place in the Harrison County Board of Education’s new offices. They are located in the former Dominion building in downtown Clarksburg on Main Street.

While the resignation likely ends the issue for the Board of Education, the legal battle will take its next step next week. Harrison County Magistrate Tammy Marple confirmed last week that Nicewarner's preliminary hearing has been set for August 8 at 10:15 a.m.

“We can move forward at this point from the school standpoint. We have to move forward and have everything ready for our students as school is getting ready to start,” said Manchin. “As for the formal letter of resignation, this shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone.”
