Driven by employees of Bombardier’s West Virginia Air Center and the local airport community, Earth Day will be celebrated at the North Central WV Airport with a community clean-up event on Monday, April 22.

Bombardier held the event internally for many years and in 2018 expanded the effort, said Airport Director Rick Rock.

"All of our employees have bought into the event," he said. "We all want to leave our area of responsibility better than we found it. Thank you to Bombardier and our airport team for leading the way for Earth Day 2019."

A team of volunteers will meet at the airport terminal at 11 a.m. ready to clean-up the airport grounds. For their efforts, the team will be provided with pizza and drinks upstairs in the Airport Terminal Building beginning at noon.

“We’ll be cleaning all entrances, to the immediate terminal area and parking lot back to the Bombardier facility,” Rock said. “We want to be litter-free by the end of the day.”

Rock said members of the community can do their part by picking up trash around their homes and neighborhoods, businesses and public areas.

“After that, go help your neighbor,” he said. “This is our community. Let’s make it the best it can be. Elimination of litter is a good place to start.”

The event is an ideal way to observe Earth Day. Observed worldwide on April 22, Earth Day revolves around efforts to support environmental protection. Across the globe, communities celebrate Earth Week focusing on various environmental issues.

“West Virginia is a beautiful state and we want our airport to be the front door of the community,” Rock said. “First impressions are very important and we will provide a good one. We want to bring awareness for the need to control litter and trash in our state, clean our immediate area and inspire others to do the same.”

R D Wilson-Sons & Co are donating clean-up supplies and Rainbow Graphics is providing the cleanup team with T-shirts. Other supporters and sponsors of the event include Domino’s Pizza, Titan Aviation Fuels, Price Cutter Bridgeport, Thrasher Engineering Inc., and Sam’s Club.
