The Bridgeport City Council will be the latest public entity to hear on the “Road to Prosperity” bond program that will be up for a statewide vote next month. Council will hear details about the $1.6 billion road bond proposal at its Monday meeting.

The meeting begins at 7 p.m.

West Virginia Division of Highways District 4 Engineer Don Williams will give a presentation to Council. District 4 is based in Harrison County, but serves counties throughout the regions. In fact, District 4 would receive more than $450 million in projects if the bond proposal is passed.

Voters will go to the ballot on Oct. 7.  The state will be holding a special election at that time that would authorize the sale of $1.6 billion in road bonds. The proposal is part of Gov. Jim Justice’s platform that he believes is needed to improve the state’s infrastructure and the economy.

Although not in Bridgeport, a major project that would take place in Harrison County if the bond is passed would improve an area just outside the city limits most are familiar with. Included in the list of projects is a $30 million split diamond interchange at the Interstate 79-U.S. Route 50.

There are 15 projects listed in Harrison County with one being in Bridgeport. The project in question is the replacement of the Virginia Avenue bridge.

No timetable or cost estimate is given for the project. However, a complete list of all projects can be found by clicking HERE.

Council will also hear a presentation from Bridgeport Middle School Principal Dave Mazza. Mazza will talk to the city’s governing body regarding a school fundraiser.

Council will also recognize Bridgeport Police Lt. Mike Lemley. Lemley recently graduated from the FBI National Academy.

In other business Monday, Council will:
  • Consider a request by Mark and Judy Bonamico, Jeremy Reneau, and Karen Sue Myers to abandon Short Street and have it conveyed to them.
  • Be asked to reappoint Roger Murray to the Bridgeport Fire Civil Service Commission for a term of four years.
  • Hear a report from Mayor Andy Lang and City Manager Kim Haws.
The meeting is open to the public. There will also be a work session at 6:15 p.m.
