There’s no denying that the Bridgeport Junior Woman’s Club made the beginning of March special for the children of J.W. Ruby Memorial Hospital at West Virginia University.  Not only did the group raise over $50,000 for a family care center in the soon-to-be-open NICU, but they also made a personal visit to the pediatric unit for a very special day.

“Dr. Seuss’s birthday is about celebrating the impact of his books on the lives of children all over the world,” said Juniors Co-President Joanna Kirk.  “The club collected Dr. Seuss books to donate to the pediatric unit at J.W. Ruby Memorial Hospital and then personally delivered them to the children.”

While visiting with the pediatric patients, the Juniors helped the children decorate Seuss-themed cupcakes, which were donated by My Little Cupcake.  They also created Cat in the Hat masks and celebrated Dr. Seuss’s birthday with all the bells and whistles he deserves, including a storytime featuring his works.

Dr. Seuss has been credited with helping children establish strong foundational skills in literacy, which is one of the areas of emphasis for the club.  They have also collected innumerable food items for area backpack programs, contributed resources to preventing domestic violence and increase awareness of community service projects throughout Harrison County.

“The Juniors approach every opportunity with such enthusiasm and so whole-heartedly that it was no surprise that the Dr. Seuss Birthday party went so well,” said member Mary Marra. “We love our community and make every effort to be actively involved in projects that elevate the quality of life for the residents.”
