A local teacher and television meteorologist is the winner of a national organization’s teaching award for science education. Bryan Schuerman, M.Ed., 6th & 7th Grade Science Teacher at Lincoln Middle School in Shinnston, WV and Chief Meteorologist at WBOY-TV 12 News (Nexstar Media Group Station – Nasdaq: NXST) in Clarksburg has been named the winner of the National Association of Geoscience Teachers (NAGT) Eastern Section Outstanding Earth Science Teacher Award for the State of West Virginia for 2017.

Schuerman says it is an honor to receive this award.

"Looking at all the past winners of this award, they have multiple years of experience," he said. "For someone to nominate me for this award in my first year of full-time teaching, means I am doing something right. I am honored and blessed that my co-workers think highly of my teaching to nominate me for this award.”

The Outstanding Earth Science Teacher (OEST) awards are given for "exceptional contributions to the stimulation of interest in the Earth Sciences at the pre-college level." Any teacher or other K-12 educator who covers a significant amount of earth science content with their students is eligible. Ten national finalists are selected, one from each NAGT regional section.

The Outstanding Earth Science Teacher Awards program was adopted by NAGT in 1971. Devised to honor pre-college teachers of earth science, the program has the following specific objectives:
  • Identify excellence in teaching
  • Appropriately recognize and reward excellence in teaching
  • Stimulate higher levels of teaching performance
  • Establish NAGT as a strong support organization for pre-college education, and
  • Via active statewide and sectional programs, build a solid state, regional, and national liaison with administrators of pre-college earth science education.
Schuerman is a Graduate of California University of Pennsylvania with a Master of Education (M.Ed.) Degree in Advanced Studies in Secondary Education and a Bachelor of Science in Science & Technology Degree. He also serves on the Student Association, Inc (SAI) Board of Directors and Alumni Association Board of Directors at California University of Pennsylvania. Bryan has been working for Harrison County Public Schools since May 2015. He began his career there as a long term substitute teacher before being hired on at Lincoln Middle School for the Half Time Science Teacher’s Position starting the 2016-2017 school year.
