In the week leading up to the second matchup featuring Bridgeport and Robert C. Byrd in high school football, another battle feature Clarksburg and Bridgeport took place. And like many believe Friday’s second round game between the Indians and Eagles will be, this one literally came down to the wire.

Clarksburg native, Bridgeport businessman and former Notre Dame High School athletic standout Andrew Banko was joined by BHS alum and Indians sports fanatic Jimmy Stutler among four individuals that tied for the top spot and proved a bit luckier than the others as they were drawn to take the top two prizes. Banko, as it turns out, was even luckier as he was the overall winner on the blind draw giving the Clarksburg area an early-week win.

Banko needs to contact Hannah Edwards at hannah@connect-bridgeport.com with his contact information and his choice of prizes. He can choose a $25 gift certificate to Buffalo Wild Wings or a small cheesecake from Almost Heaven Desserts. Stutler will also need to email Edwards with his contact information and will receive the prize not taken by Banko.

Joining those two at the top of the picking pile this week were Michael Andrew and Eric Carpenter. All four had a strong week in going 30-3. They were followed by nine individuals tied for fifth as Clayce Spurlock, Pete Curry, Patsy Sabatelli, Chris Oliverio, Curt Burner, Hugh Gainer, Doug Marquette, Kevin Carbacio, and Stacy Greely all finished 29-4.

The rest of the top 25 featured an 18-way deadlock at the No. 14 spot. JT Hilton, David Marshall, Jason Jimmie, Scott Nicewarner, Jeff Toquinto, Michael Mann, Butch Elliott, Steven Hastings, Adam Holbert, Aaron Mann, Jason Dodd, Tyler Furbee, Frank Blake, Michael Harki, Jeff Muller, WJ Bramer, Frank Cherubino, and Mike Alastanos completed the week at 28-5.

In the overall standings, multi-time champion Kevin Carbacio is looking to add another title as he has added just the slightest bit of cushion to his first place lead. Carbacio is 261-73 on the year, while runner-up Michael Andrew is 259-75. Those two are followed by a tie for third place as Adam Holbert and Louis Aragona are at 257-77. Rounding out the top five is another tie as Jeff Muller and Vernon Louk both stand at 255-79.

Another multi-champion is also in the top 10. Hugh Gainer is all alone in seventh with a mark of 254-80. He’s followed by five individuals even at No. 8 as Ryan Chandler, Bill Montgomery, Kelly Ayoob, Frank Blake and past champion Jason Hartman are at 253-81.

At No. 13, Frank Cherubino and Chris Byrd are knotted up at 252-82. Three individuals – Lenora Montgomery, Mark Trippett and Mike Alastanos – are tied at No. 15 thanks to an overall mark of 251-83. Curt Burner is alone at No. 18 with a record of 250-84.

Two locals are sporting the same record at No. 19. Matt Ash and Michael Mann have 249-85 marks after 12 weeks. David Wagner, John Oldaker, and Chris Oliverio come in at No. 21 thanks to having a record of 248-86. Rounding out the top 25 is a five-way with Robert Marra, Don Cumming, Eric Carpenter, Jason McCall and James Burton II all at 247-87.

Someone from the field of the hundreds registered will walk away the winner of some serious prizes. The prize packages are still being put together for the year. However, one of the top prizes include a $500 gift certificate from the Meadowbrook Mall. The top three pickers will be awarded prizes at the end of the contest, which goes well into December. The overall winner has their choice of the three prizes, while the second place winner will have their choice then of the final two remaining prizes.

What makes the Carder Motors Playoff Payoff competition unique is that once the contest is over you don’t necessarily know who the winner is even though you will see your weekly overall ranking and Connect-Bridgeport will post the weekly and overall top 25 throughout the contest. At the end of the year, everyone that competes has their two worst weeks dropped and then the winner is announced based on the highest winning percentage.

For those entering late, you may not win the end-of-the-contest prizes, but you can still win weekly prizes. And it’s easy to do.

If you are a registered member of Connect-Bridgeport's Web site, all you have to do is make sure you're signed in and the click the Playoff Payoff icon on the home page that can be found by scrolling down to the left. Another unique aspect of the competition is that you can make changes to your picks leading up to games on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Individuals can make their picks for Friday’s games and can change them until 6 p.m. Friday. Games that are listed on Saturday and Sunday can be entered and changed as many times as necessary until 11 a.m. each day of the picks.

Unfortunately, there are occasional schedule changes - usually on the prep football side - that staff does not catch; usually games moved to Thursday or a time change bumped up. There are also occasional mistakes with the proper teams playing each other. As has been the case in the past, each person will either be given a win for those games when there are schedule changes we miss or a mistake on our end or a or they will simply not be counted for the weekly and final standings.

Several games were deleted this week due to being entered incorrectly as well as an error on one of the schedules. One contest was also deleted for being listed twice.

You must use your actual name to compete. Nicknames or aliases will not be recognized for weekly or overall prizes.
