Sgt. C.W. Barto of Bridgeport Police Department has released details about a single-vehicle accident which took place Wednesday afternoon on East Main Street.

Barto is the investigating officer for the 4:13 p.m. wreck in which a Subaru Forester came to rest on the front porch of Palm & Tarot Reading on East Main Street. The female driver was traveling in the westbound lane and was the only occupant of the vehicle.

“She basically fell asleep and went off the roadway to the right, struck a light post owned by the city which had been on the east side of Main Street and Williams Avenue,” Barto said. “After striking that lamp post, she continued traveling west – partially off the road – where she struck the city’s sign for Williams Avenue/East Main and continued traveling after that, down an embankment in front of 410 East Main Street, where she wiped out a mailbox, stairwell and came to rest on the wooden walkway in front of the building.”

Barto said there were no injuries, but there was significant damage to the front end of the Subaru. The vehicle was removed from the scene by Dan Riggs Towing.

“The house was not structurally damaged,” he said. “It could have been a lot worse.”

Renters of the property – which is owned by David Reep – were inside at the time.
