More than a hundred members of the Fairmont State University campus community attended the swearing-in and promotion of four campus police officers.

Marion County Deputy County Clerk Tom Antulov officiated the swearing-in of Fairmont State’s new Chief of Police Matt Swain. In addition to Swain, John Nigh was promoted to Lieutenant, C.J. Funk to Lead Officer and Makenzie White was sworn in as a Patrolman.

On March 31, Chief Jack Clayton - the former Bridgeport Police Chief - retired after seven years as the Fairmont State chief of police. Matt Swain assumed the role of Chief on April 1 after serving as the Deputy Chief of Police since 2011. Swain began his career at Fairmont State in 2002 when he was hired as a student patrolman. In 2004 he was hired as a security guard and graduated with a bachelor’s of science degree in criminal justice in 2007. He went on to graduate from the West Virginia State Police Academy in the same year. In 2014, Swain was selected to attend the FBI National Academy in Quantico, VA. Less than one percent of the nation’s police officers attend the academy.

Lieutenant John C. Nigh received his emergency medical technician certification at Fairmont State in 2002 and began working as a security guard in 2009. In 2013 he was promoted to patrolman and graduated from the West Virginia State Police Academy in 2014. Nigh coordinates ALICE training and emergency medical response on campus.

Charles J. (C.J.) Funk began working in student security in 2013 and was hired as a patrolman in 2014. He graduated from the West Virginia State Police Academy in the same year.

Makenzie B. White graduated from Fairmont State in 2017 with a degree in criminal justice. She was hired as a patrolman in April and will attend the West Virginia Police Academy in the near future.

Clayton will continue to work with Fairmont State’s Campus Police as the Director of Emergency Services.
