It's Official: Elected Board of Education Members Give Approval to Matt DeMotto as BHS's Next Principal

On Tuesday, it became official. The next principal at Bridgeport High School got a thumbs up from the elected members of the Harrison County Board of Education.

The recommendation of Harrison County Superintendent of Schools Dr. Mark Manchin was accepted. What that means is the next principal at BHS will be current Assistant Principal Matt DeMotto.

DeMotto has been at Bridgeport High School since 2006 when he began serving under current principal Mark DeFazio, whose retirement becomes official June 30. DeMotto not only has plenty of time in at BHS, but also in the education system. He began his career in 1990, which means this coming school year will mark the 29th year serving as an educator or an administrator.

"I'm grateful for the support of Dr. Manchin and the Board of Education. I'm espeically grateful for the support of our Faculty Senate," said DeMotto. "The enormity of this responsibility does not escape me and we will work very hard to continue to build on our success. This will be accomplished by a strong and dedicated staff, supportive parents and community, and students who live up to expectations."

Manchin said seven people applied for DeFazio’s position. He also said the process was a smooth one and somewhat different than others.

“It was a bit different in that it was one of my easier selections since I’ve been here,” said Manchin. “I’ve had the opportunity to work with Mr. DeMotto on a number of occasions and he’s a leader and a person of high moral character.”

Manchin said DeMotto’s time at the school was a big factor in the decision process. Not just because he’s been there, but because of what’s transpired while he’s been an assistant.

“He’s worked closely with Mr. DeFazio during a time period where Bridgeport has been the highest achieving high school in the state and it’s an outstanding school that receives statewide recognition,” said DeMotto. “I think you’ll see a continuation of the leadership of Mr. DeFazio that made that happen under Mr. DeMotto, even though he’s his own man. We see this as a seamless transition.”

Manchin was involved with the interview process along with others at the board office. He also said the Bridgeport High School Faculty Senate had input as well.

“Mr. DeMotto was far and away the best candidate and will continue great work at the school for many years,” said Manchin.
