As a freshman and sophomore, he participated in band at BHS, having performed in jazz band, marching band, show choir and steel drum band. Derek also demonstrates a love for serving others, as he has been instrumental in starting Bridgeport High School’s “Life League,” a club that aims to promote good mental health and create an awareness for suicide prevention, both within the school and throughout the community. Derek is also an inducted member of the National Honor Society and has maintained an overall GPA of 4.0 or higher throughout his time at BHS. Additionally, Derek serves as a volunteer through both 4-H and HOBY. He is also quite involved with digital media at BHS. For the past two years, he has been a member of the Indian Insider crew and has also created ads to promote various clubs and events for the school and community. Last year, he directed an award-winning short film about the dangers of drinking and driving, as well as a documentary about the teacher strike. After high school, Derek plans to continue training in film and theater arts.

BHS Principal Matt DeMotto said Students of the Month are selected by the BHS staff. Members are asked to consider character, respect, behavior, academics, effort, attendance, extra-curriculars, leadership and trustworthiness when selecting students. It is an honor and a challenge, DeMotto said, because there are so many deserving BHS students.
