Main Street Traffic Delays Likely Through Thursday as Parks and Rec Staff Puts up Christmas Decorations

For the next several days, traffic on Main Street may be backed up at times. And for many of Bridgeport’s frequent travelers, it’s a delay they usually don’t mind.

The reason for the minor inconvenience, and that some don’t get up in arms, is that the Bridgeport Parks and Recreation Department is busy making the downtown corridor ready to light up. According to Director Don Burton, city staff is putting up decorations that necessitate the need to block one lane of traffic for several hours daily.

“We apologize for the minor inconveniences that will be experienced during the next few days and hope that people we have some patience in the areas along Main Street where we’ll be working,” said Burton. “This will take several days, perhaps until Thursday.

“Most understand that the crew is hanging up Christmas decorations on the Main Street corridor,” he continued. “The decorations go from Virginia Avenue all the way down to Route 131.”

The decorations include the lights that cross the roadways. The utility poles, or street lights, will be wrapped with ribbon and garland as well. Many businesses along Main Street enhance what the city is doing with decorations of their own.

“One of the things we receive a lot of positive feedback on are the decorations and it’s one of the things I think the city does a really nice job with,” said Burton. “The decorations help put everyone in a festive mood.”

The city actually began the decorating process last week. Burton said Parks staff put the decorations up along the road leading to the entrance to Meadowbrook Mall.

“After we complete the lights and other items we need to complete along the Main Street corridor, we’ll begin with the city Christmas tree,” said Burton. “You’ll see the tree going up in the very near future.”

Burton wasn’t sure of the exact time when that will take place. However, he was sure when it the city’s annual “Light Up Night” will take place. Burton said the highly popular event is scheduled Thursday evening, Nov. 30 on Main Street.
