Photos: Secretary Warner Visits BHS Encouraging High School Students to Vote

West Virginia Secretary of State Mac Warner visited Harrison County high schools on Thursday in an effort to encourage eligible high school students to register to vote. Warner made a stop by Bridgeport High School Thursday morning.Harrison County (Salem, WV) is the birthplace of the late Jennings Randolph who served West Virginia as a congressman and then U.S. senator. Randolph is considered the father of the 26th Amendment which reduced the voting age from 21 to 18. It took Randolph nearly three decades to get the Amendment passed into law.
The 26th Amendment was approved by both Houses of Congress on March 23, 1971. It was then sent to the states for ratification before it could become part of the U.S. Constitution. This coming Saturday marks the 48th anniversary of congressional approval of the 26th Amendment.
Warner spoke to high school students about the importance of voting and why Jennings Randolph worked so hard over so many years to give 18, 19 and 20 year olds the right to participate in elections and run for public office.
Warner was accompanied by Harrison County Clerk Susan Thomas.
