For those visiting Bridgeport who have already sampled the city's fare or those who are residents of the city and beyond looking for a trip for a new culinary experience, here's a recent edition of WBOY's Restaurant Road Trip. This week, the segment is, in fact, a bit of a road trip as it's a little more than 40 miles from the city up I-79 and I-68 for a restaurant that's just a few years old. Here's a look at the Spent Grain Cafe and Screech Owl Brewig.

FROM WBOY

It all started more than three years ago when Christa Johnson got her husband Roger a beer kit as a Christmas present. It's now transformed into Preston County's only award-winning craft brewery with a packed crowd starting at lunch time.

The beer starts out with a quarter ton of barley per week, which is then brewed in the German tradition with local well water. With seven beers currently on tap, Roger and his team are always making something new to fill their taps and growlers. It's what's done after the grain is infused in the beer is what is truly unique.

"That grain after we've washed all the sugars and enzymes out of it from the beer is then not ground up it's used whole in our breads," said Roger.

That grain is called spent. And it has a honey like flavoring that brings out the best in their homemade pepperoni rolls, hamburger buns and fresh made pizza.

The local joint's goal is to serve what they want to eat at the dinner table like housemade chili and dough-wrapped hot dogs.
