A routine traffic stop for a vehicle not having its lights on turned into a drug-related arrest along with an investigation into potentially more charges, according to a Bridgeport Police Officer.

On Wednesday, Officer. W.J. “Jody” Cunningham pulled over a 1999 Chevrolet Silverado on Interstate 79. Cunningham said the vehicle did not have its headlights on in the rain.

“Any time you have adverse atmospheric conditions such as rain, snow, sleet and things of that nature, state law requires you to have your headlights on,” said Cunningham.

The vehicle was heading southbound on Interstate 79 when Cunningham pulled over 45-year-old Francis McDaniel. Cunningham pulled him off at the 121 exit.

“The driver’s license was suspended for DUI third offense, and perhaps fourth offense … based on his criminal history,” said Cunningham, who said the driver was not intoxicated.

The driver did have Xanax on him without a prescription. Xanax is a controlled substance. A passenger, who is still under investigation at this time and their name is not being released because of that, had six Klonopin, meth pipes and drug paraphernalia on them. Klonopin is a Schedule 4 narcotic.

McDaniel was taken to North Central Regional Jail, said Cunningham.

Editor's Note: Officer W.J. "Jody" Cunningham goes over paperwork following Wednesday's arrests.
