West Virginia University basketball legend Hot Rod Hundley has passed away at age 80, according to a tweet from Mountaineer basketball coach Bob Huggins.
“West Virginia lost a dear friend today as Hot Rod Hundley has passed away,” Huggins tweeted. “He will be dearly missed. Rod was not only a friend of WVU, but a dear friend to our basketball program. I will miss him very much. RIP Hot Rod.”
Hundley, one of two players in Mountaineer program history to have his jersey retired, debuted for West Virginia in the 1955 season. Coming to Morgantown from Charleston, Hundley helped guide WVU to its first NCAA appearance and three total appearances between 1955 and 1957.
